The holidays bring people together, but being together doesn’t always mean we’re connecting.
As November arrives, many of us begin preparing for the holiday season. Calendars fill up, shopping lists grow, family traditions take center stage, and before we know it, we’re moving from one gathering to the next.
But in the middle of all that activity, when was the last time you had a conversation that went beyond the usual, “How have you been?” or “What’s new?”
Sometimes we spend so much time talking that we forget to truly listen.
Meaningful connection doesn’t require a special occasion, a perfect setting, or even hours of uninterrupted time. Sometimes it begins with one thoughtful question and the willingness to hear the answer.
Instead of asking questions that invite a quick yes or no, try asking open-ended questions that give someone room to share their thoughts, memories, experiences, and feelings.
And here’s something important: You don’t have to fix everything someone shares with you.
We often rush to offer advice, share our own experiences, or explain how someone should handle a situation. But sometimes people aren’t looking for answers. They simply want to feel heard, understood, and valued.
This holiday season, challenge yourself to slow down. Put the phone away. Be curious about the people sitting across from you. Ask another question. Listen without interrupting. Allow the conversation to go somewhere unexpected.
Because relationships aren’t strengthened simply by spending time together. They’re strengthened when people feel safe enough to show up as themselves.
